Tao Xinqi: I used to be a hip-hop dancer, which determined that the identity and body expression of such type of dancer should be one of the core stones in my art. In the past two years, I had experienced the windstorm of business and capital operation under the huge tide of Chinese entrepreneurship. Such cross-field and cross-social-identity personal history endows a strong mixed character (remix), wild temperament and possibilities that are indefinable in my works. Currently I’m focusing on building my ‘Sub-human’ performance system - a system based on my long-term performance practices that cannot be simply classified on its present forms, has an independent but remixed world view and very clear visual and body style, and also combines with the text. Sub-human can be the simulacra of anything in the world, its body and performance format are between the consciousness and unconsciousness; meanwhile it explores the relationship of choreography and improvisation. Under the essential concept of deconstruct/destroy the authenticity of the world, my works are devoted to push forward the public’s cognition and pursue of the hip-hop art and culture, as well as express the human common spirit dilemma under huge changes of our time. Beside performance, currently my works also explore fields of image/photography, video, installation, 3-D works and music.
