Maybe it’s because of the environment of my growing up. My parents are both experts on sculptures. Out of curiosity, I loved asking questions like “Why?” and “What is it?” when I was little. My parents would answer my questions with patience. Those answers were about materials and image. Some of them were about representation and symbolic & metaphorical spiritual sustenance. Being muddled, it seemed that I started caring about images and the meanings behind them with curiosity.

René Magritte once said, “There is always something hidden behind everything we see. We always expect to see what’s hidden in front of us.” With professional improvement and personal growth, my desire to tap into presentation & the hidden image & the meaning behind them. I tried to tell about them in the ways I know.

Painting somehow is individualized. Chinese painting is especially individualized as its expression is more subtle and deep than other genres of painting. In terms of historical context, Chinese literati painting is a window to express human spirit. It’s an introverted expression in which creators seek their own ideal world and try to avoid real life. I also pursue the same in my creative ideals. Maybe it lacks the hearty and pleasure of “scribble writing and self-chatting for entertainment” in my application of the ink techniques used in Chinese ink-and-wash painting; however, my expression streaming down the ink on my paintings seems to be obvious.
