Fan Yourong: I aim to find an indescribable feeling in my paintings, a feeling that leads from one vista to another but has no clear direction. I do not want to construct a complete narrative in the paintings. Instead, I try to prompt the viewer with various elements — symbols, atmosphere, and materials — to lead their perception into a space of possibility. I want my viewers to construct their own narration. In today's fragmented world, I don't believe in over-grand themes that can provide clarity. Instead, I prefer to manifest my own unique disposition, even if this results in work that is highly personal. In my exploration of the painting language, I continue to focus on my selection of subject matter: the granular sensation of linen, the material sense of sketching, the visual effect that light grey has on my feelings... These form a visual atmosphere that reminds me and my viewers of the power of their independent points of views.
