"Samadhi", in Buddhism, means "persistent stillness". This arises by throwing away distracting thoughts, concentrating on mediation and gaining calmness of mind. It cultivates life and the pursuit of art. In "Old Tree" painting by PengHui, an old tree appears to be withered and dead, but stretches out unyieldingly. The branch, dropping like a crab claw into sky, has great pathos, resembling Painting of a Tablet Reading and Stone by Li Cheng (919 AD-967 AD). The trunk looks almost human, creating a sense of magic in the piece. Peng also paints scenes of natural and man - made disasters, such as snow storms, fires, cyclones, and traffic accidents. He has great sensitivity to the destruction he sees in the world around him. In his works, one senses a nameless sadness that permeates modern day life. (Duan Jun)
