Tian Fangfang: The inspiration for my work comes from the frescoes of the Buddhist art in the Dunhuang Grottoes. When I learned that there were seven to eight layers of frescoes on the same wall painted by various dynasties. I was deeply touched by the depth of this artistic place. In this way, the culture of our nation has passed down and inherited, generation by generation. For ancient people, the spirit of their nations were in these frescoes. I chose this as a platform to explore conflicts between the past and contemporary times: conflicts between living environments of the traditional and the industrial, conflicts between the architecture of the past and today, conflicts between the violent feuds of yesterday and the wards of our time. Examining the process by which everything is destroyed and rebuilt and transformed from ancient times through today inspires a kind of samsara. These are rich waters for reflection.
