Zhang Chunhua: I prefer selecting relatively simple, pure scene and subjects: water, forests and towers have the character of steady, recessive mastery. These classical subjects repeatedly emerge and haunt my memories. In contrast with the future, the past seems like something we own, full of sedimentary things set onto the screen of time. This makes an artist smoother and more confident in his painting. I don't pursue an expressive style. I prefer the process of breaking things down, creating frequent ruptures in the painting. Each layer shows one place of interest, and eventually the work has the approximate effect of a heart being cleaned out of its various uncertainties.
