Zhou Mo: In this series of works, I mainly focus on the "blank " in Chinese paintings. Traditionally, the "blank" has had a shaping function in ar tistic conception, but in contemporar y times, its function is not limited to expressing emptiness and nothingness but has expanded to showing holistic atmosphere and symbo lically representing Chinese culture. Unlike minimalism, the oriental cultural background of the blank fills the work with poetic sense, conveying an emotional rather than rational expression from the concrete to the abstract. Meanwhile, the blank in my works is also different from the pure color ethos ofminimalism; instead, it has a fluidity of colors in a certain ambiguity and density. In contrast to pure white, it allows t he audience to have an unlimited imagination. Such is the reason why I always adopt the blank in my paintings.
