Ding Hao: Between 2013 and 2015, I combined rare hardwoods such as purple sandalwood with my interest in classical Chinese architecture to create my works about old cities. These works combine classical Chinese architecture with modern structures, using pieces of wood measuring in millimeters to create whole works such as “Floating City” and “Tower to Heaven” that range in size from dozens of centimeters up to 6 meters. During the creation of these works, in the face of a finished and immovable world, I was not content to rest in the safety of the known; I attempted to transcend my experience of the physical objects that surrounded me. Even when it required me to disregard logic or the laws of physics, I still at all times tried to bring an unbridled freedom to my creative process. When I create structure after structure that does not (and cannot) exist in the real world, scenes where fantasy and reality coexist, I find great pleasure in being an artist who can allow imagination to flow into his work.
