Hu Wendan: In the first stage of my work, for a period of time, I painted lone objects on a blank canvas, keeping their most simple and primitive forms. Each of these objects, to some degree, was related to the mood that I sought to portray in my paintings. Slowly, I came to favor bonsai trees as my subject matter, as bonsai trees themselves are works of art. What I am most interested in, however, is the way in which plants or trees are re-formed into shapes outside what they would naturally be when forced to comply with human aesthetics. Starting with the "Blue Notre Dame", my life entered another phase, and my work would of course follow. Life can be strange sometimes. Previously, a human form would never appear in my work, whereas now I focus my attention on humanism, life, and time. Perhaps life really is an unpredictable journey.
