She Chenqi: I try to exercise self-constraint in the process of painting, controlling the manual action of painting. Each divided grid section of a picture is independent. Dividing a picture into sections of a grid interrupts the subjective process of viewing a complete work; the only work that can be viewed completely is the small section. The image that is created in the end is one beyond subjective control, a combination of each individual section. The canvas explores the relationship between independent parts and the whole. Regarding the contents of the images on the canvas, they shift over time from earlier works about dollar store products to later focusing on groups of people, as I explore through painting the relationship between the individual and the reality in which he lives.
