Wang Mingze: I've always preferred to work in sculpture, with my feelings quite possibly springing from my love of the material to be sculpted itself. For example, wood has an original, primitive texture that allows people to relate to it. Its unavoidable cracks and grain tell a story of its life, giving me a strong sense of the struggle to survive the tree once faced, as well as the unstoppable progression of time. Another example would be the coldness and lifelessness of metal materials. My emotion, at the same time, also springs from the language of sculpture itself, which brings about power by occupying space and forming textured surfaces. During my creative process, I try to get avoid the influence exerted by complicated and visualized social forces on art by exploring various materials and searching for ways to transform my feelings into specific forms or images. However, I do not intended to stress the sense of life in certain works, but rather the similarities and differences between objects and materials, and to seek out how the reflection or image of the "object" is connected with my own self image.
