Like many others looking for a cheap place to live, Zhang Lei chose to live on an island in the Yangtze River. On this island, he found a bucolic environment with small villages, tree-lined roads, river banks and vineyards, of course punctuated with the lights of motorcycles in the morning and evening, and the quiet river in the light of dusk with the stars rising above. This scene slowly became a monochrome single-print edition lithograph. The smooth and delicate tone of Zhang Lei's work expresses his emotional state in such an environment, with the marks of his free brush strokes adding a great deal of interesting artistic language, as the meaning of life comes to be felt more deeply as shades of light change. While only a small stretch of water separates the island, it seems to be a different world, and as one moves between the two worlds daily, one begins to favor on over the other, and slowly develops a different aesthetic sense.
