Zhang Lei: The "Dowry" series reveals the relationship between ready-made objects and sand paintings. It is not only an exploration of how easel painting should progress in an era of images, but also about how to make thought "real", about the formation of an aesthetic object and the possibility of innovation in practice. If we see the silk's existing pattern as a template, then part of the painting becomes a copy. The opposing state of the two reveals the question of nature and freedom. A copy, to a template, can be described as a negation and criticism of making oneself an object to depict. Outside of it, but still in its category, a copy that does not tend toward "arbitrary" beauty in its form is the "true" essence. Why use old silk quilts as a canvas? - They are dowries. Time, life, sex, love, death all took place beneath them. Besides revealing that, I don't feel I need to do anything else.
