Huang Kunxiong: My works focus on the continuous and repetitive modern architecture. They are the foundation of my paintings. Within a seemingly redundant structure, I look for its variations and try to achieve a balance in those chaotic variations. Through strong formalistic images, I strive to illustrate the sense of coldness and distance among people and between people and objects nowadays. The painting technique I used is purely flat. It appears almost programed and mechanized, eliminating traditional painterly features. Without free and lively brushstrokes, the painting is left with cold and sharp layers of color. These different color layers were lay on each other to create an image that is both flat and three-dimensional. The repetitive nature of the pictorial structure and the framework of architecture itself lent a strong abstraction to the otherwise figurative architecture.
