Lin Congwen: The Nine-Color Deer is a holy deer in Buddhist tales. In my eyes, it is much more than a deer with nine colors. As the Buddhist sutras go, “form is emptiness; emptiness is form.” Form is a representation of all the things in the world, while the Nine-Color Deer is the epitome of the intricate relationships behind all these things. By deconstructing the Form and the Deer and reconstructing them, I can create aesthetic patterns as well as probe into the profound causes of the subtle relationships. The Deer in the paintings is “I” standing still, observing what is and what was; meanwhile the Deer is also the countless flesh and souls, interweaving with each other to express emotions and interpret life.
