Wu Yue: I depict old buildings in the 70s and 80s of China. All of them are ordinary buildings with no fame widely seen in cities and countries, such as factory dormitories, school buildings and storage houses etc. These places are where I was born, educated and playing. Not only do they carry my childhood memories, but also daily memories of other Chinese people. The buildings are neither well-known nor great, but lively record the life details from a humble age. Thus I am deeply moved by their intensive humanity. The outdated structure, mottled texture are “time”, “space” and “weight” in my view as I transform them into sculpture works. I make them into monuments because I value their serious and silent characteristics. On one hand, it recalls me of the humble age. On the other, it calls for the necessity for Chinese cities to retain their historical stories.
