Yan Dafu: To summarize what I have been studying recently, I would say it is a gleaning through “scraps of cultural symbols”. The conceptual extraction of cultural symbols is what I have been applying as the basis of my works (from the previous Lapel series to the current Scraps series). This is a broad and overabundant subject that has prompted many debates within the field already and I need not to say much. However I believe the attitude of gleaning scraps is a subject that worth further in-depth studies. “Scrap” corresponds to adjectives such as “unnecessary”, “informal” and “marginal”. It is different from works that are too serious. The gleaning of scraps is naturally accompanied by a planned work cycle and its intrinsic pointlessness.
