Zhang Wenzhi: I have always had strong interest in myths of ghosts and spirits. The bizarre and eccentric tales of phantoms and demons often stir up people’s curiosity to the unknown world. Ever since Qin Dynasty in China, ghost story has been an important genre in literature. Whether they are considered as superstition or unfound fabrication, they are often the topic of discussion in pastime. Even in modern metropolitan context when technology develops rapidly, ghosts and spirits remain relevant because they rely and live on people’s desire and emotion. Out of personal interest, I was once very keen to collect urban ghost stories. In the present work, I have chosen a few images of ghosts from modern Chinese urban ghost stories and combined them with news stories and hot topics in society. They appear among clusters of skyscrapers in the painting. This is also my impression and imagination of the modern city.
