Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen: Sound holds clues to the characteristics of a place beyond what can be captured in a visual image. My practice is driven by the conviction that hearing plays an equally vital role to vision in the experience of places and aims to develop a deeper consideration of the auditory dimension of perceptual experience. I explore how the practice of listening can be used to interrupt the seen and challenge traditional constructs shaped by our upright, bipedal, seeing bodies, which form the framework through which artists have traditionally engaged with notions of landscape. My drawings examine experience as an aggregate of sensory elements; for instance, a pulsating color or the shape of a sound. The past year has seen a development of my practice towards examining my bodily engagement with places through walking, sitting and listening.
