Cultural contradiction is always an axis of expression in its creation. Rather than playing with the cultural codes, Cheng Fan leads this game to the point where it dissolves into the absurd. For him, cultural contradictions are less an ideological question or an original anchor than an artistic material to be carried away further, towards this zone of de-identification, where the void belongs no more to one particular tradition than to another, and where the sensations have developed a plastic research on various investments in the choice of experimental mediums, in a plasticity which is refined, in a poetic singularity, particularly in a research on the difference between Chinese and Western aesthetics, so as to find the possibility of pictorial language and contemporaneity of expression. - Antonia Birnbaum (French Contemporary philosopher)
