Gail Gai: I like collecting all sorts of materials. In 2012, I started to keep my fallen hair. It wasn’t until 2015 that I decided to turn it into a comb that I use every day. Everyone has a different personality, and the items we use in our daily lives differ as well. The comb is one of many personal tools a woman possesses. When friends around me found out about this piece I was working on, they too began collecting strand after strand of fallen hair, and asked me to transform them into combs they now themselves use. By exhibiting this set of combs, I wish to invite viewers to join me in this trans-formational psychological process of collecting fallen hair. When viewing one’s own hair that has left the body transform into one’s most familiar comb, this combination of familiarity and unfamiliarity will marvel you.
