Xu BingThe series titled “You have to eat it after it is dead and before it is rotten” presents meat that has been already been cut into nearly identical commercial food products. The work explores the relationship between living things, that is to say life, and commercial products, and how the former transforms into the latter. Each of these edible commercial products were once part of an individual animal’s body, but once passed through rigorous human processes on an assembly line, became products with similar specifications and quality to many other like them. In the huge industrial food chain atop which man sits, life’s meaning becomes insignificant. This conversion from life to food product is not just a change in volume and quality, but also has a spiritual dimension. Are our lives also unbeknownst to us becoming divided by trivial matters, becoming like an assembly line as we become numbed, mediocre and fragmented.
