Zhang Liang: Art is one of our modes of expression. It is a way to convey our attitude towards how we view ourselves and the environment in which we live. As the German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer said, “the essence of painting lies not in the creation of images, but rather in the realm of the artist’s own actual existence and memory. This constitutes the essence of painting.” It was in the name of art that we learned to cut wood, allowing fuzzy images to gradually emerge. We then apply pressure via a machine, allowing ink to be printed onto paper. This process only has value insofar as there is participation by art. We ultimately realize that “art” is actually an attitude.
