Zhang Ruo: I was born in a ordinary northern rural family, for generations we've all been farmers. The most profound memory of my childhood was to labor in the plains with the grown ups. The grown ups say to me: “You must study hard, get into university and leave this place. In primary school the teacher say: “Knowledge changes one’s fate. You must improve yourself everyday and one day leave this place.” Slowly the books became my focus of labor. One day I got into university and there were more and more text books for me to read but I could understand them less and less. After graduating I came to Beijing and started to work as an artist. The work is hectic just the same as those of ordinary people here. Do all human beings have to work? Why is that? Is work part of our destiny? Where is our destiny bringing us? We do not know. What I know is that we cannot stop now, and can't go back to the past.
