Zhang Xiaoyues works demonstrate profound humanistic concerns with a calm and dignified gesture, and her reflections on the current era and history. The exhibited work is her new The Death of John Doe 2017: pieces of hard objects (stone), seemingly isolated, are supported by green, so that hardness becomes soft and the sense of isolation spills into the mysterious distance. With different sentiments given by different materials, the artist constructs a complex relationship which is both extremely antagonistic and harmonious. In the stone model, the artist fills the stone gap with books of art history, reconstructs nature (a real stone body) and humanity (a prosthesis made from pages of a book). In this way he manifests the creators macroscopic historical imagination, his detailed pondering of humanity, and his ambition to build personal, historical and realistic relationships: to recreate the epitaph of life that has been destroyed and forgotten in the course of human civilization.
